Rules

Saint Louis College of Music organizes the 4th edition of the European Jazz Contest (EJC), music competition for jazz artists and groups. Partners of the initiative: Siena Jazz, Musica Oggi, Jazzit Magazine, “Odio l’Estate” Festival.

1. GENERAL
The participation is open to all subjects resident in Europe. Application requests coming from extra European Countries will be singularly considered by the requests receiving commission. The average age of the group’s components must be within 35 years old. Groups with minors will not be admitted in any case.
The 2012 edition will be directed to
2 categories:
 Jazz Instrumental (instrumental groups), Vocal Jazz (groups with vocalists).

2. PRIZES
- 1st PRIZE – INSTRUMENTAL and VOCAL categories:
Awarded to the groups 1st classified of both categories.

a) Edition and publication of an original CD for the label Jazz Collection, distributed in European CD shops, on the principal digital platforms and in all Italian Culture Institutes abroad. The edition rights will be treated with autonomous private writing; without edition concession to the Editor the CD will not be either recorded or published.

b) Two years Artistic Management Contract with Saint Louis Management, targeted to the group promotion on National territory, with an overall granted minimum of 10 concerts in the main Italian Festivals, jazz clubs or in Italian Culture Institutes abroad.

- BEST SOLOISTS PRIZE:
Up to 4 scholarships for the International Jazz Workshop Jazz’s Cool 2013 and Siena Jazz 2013 (summer workshops), awarded the best soloists chosen among all groups participating in the competition’s final rounds.
Up to 4 yearly subscriptions to Jazzit Magazine awarded to the best soloists chosen among all groups participating in the competition’s final rounds.

3. APPLICATION
The application to the JAZZ CONTEST is
free, and has to be done within March 16th 2011.

PHASES AND PARTICIPATION MODALITIES

The 2012 EJC will articulate in 3 rounds:

I roundPre-selection:
On the basis of a demo cd (or mp3 files), the commission will select all the groups which will have to perform during the second phase. The selection will be carried out under unconditional judgement of the
Saint Louis staff and will be chaired by its Director Stefano Mastruzzi.

The deadline for the registration and the demo sending is fixed on March 16th 2011.

II round) Live Selections:
The pre-selected groups will be put in a live concerts selection schedule subdivided in several nights and according to the two categories (
Instrumental and Vocal Jazz). The selections will be held in 4 different Italian towns: Roma, Siena, Milano, Brindisi. The live selections will start from April 16th 2012 on. By filling in the application web-form the candidates will have to choose 2 preference towns; the official town will be then chosen by the organization.

Schedule of the live selections (subject to variations):
April 16th and 17th – Milano, Le Scimmie
April 23rd – Siena, Enoteca Italiana
April 27th – Brindisi, Saint Louis branch Auditorium
May 2nd/3rd and 9th/10th – Rome, Music Inn

The groups who will decide to pick up Siena and Brindisi as town for the live selections will be granted a travel refund (under submission of receipts) up to € 200. Such refund will be granted to no more than 4 groups for each of the two towns (priority will be given to the groups who will register first). For the groups who will select Rome and Milan for the live selections there will be no travel expenses refund whatsoever. Hotel expenses will not be refunded in any case in any of the four towns.

Each performance will be subject to the judgement of an artistic commission, made up of well-known musicians and/or sector journalists and operators. The results will be deposited in Saint Louis College of Music of Rome. The groups selected in the 4 towns that will proceed to the 3rd phase will be announced at the end of the live selection phase, within May 31st.

III round) Finals:
The finalist groups (up to 12) will perform inside the summer festival “Odio l’Estate”, inside Villa Carpegna Park in Rome. The dates of the finals will be communicated within June 30th 2012.

The 2 winners (1 group for the Instrumental category, 1 group for the Vocal category) as well as the best soloists (singers and/or instrumentalists) will be chosen by the commission and announced at the end of the performances.

The aforementioned dates could be subject to modifications for management reasons; the variations will be communicated to all participants in due time.

Participation:
- In order to be admitted it is necessary to have a live repertoire of 50 minutes the least and a demo containing 4 original tracks the least.
- Application is open to jazz – either traditional or contemporaneous – projects in a whatever language or dialect.
- Each artist, by getting enrolled, declares the originality of the submitted compositions thus lifting the organization from any controversy connected to the compositions themselves, to their performance and to possible conflicts on the patrimonial rights.

Application:
a) Fill in the apposite web form on the website www.europeanjazzcontest.eu
b) Send the music tracks, 4 the least,
within March 16th 2012, according to one of the following modalities:

- e-mail: send 4 original composition tracks the least plus two standards in Mp3 size to info@jazzcontest.it
The sent files will rigorously have to be named in the format: artistname-tracktitle.mp3
It is also possible to send a separate mail for each single track indicating the group name and the track title in every single mail. Object of the e-mail: “EJC 2011 - Jazz Vocal (or) Jazz Instrumental Category” plus the name of the group/artist.

Or
Send by
mail or hand out by hand a CD or DVD in closed envelop containing at least 4 original tracks plus two standards to the following address: Saint Louis College of Music – Via Urbana 49a - 00184 Rome, Italy. On the envelope the candidate will have to write “EJC 2011 - Jazz Vocal (or) Jazz Instrumental Category” plus the name of the group/artist.

GENERAL RULES - Common to all categories

1. The registration confirmation, the application’s acceptance and the dates for the various rounds will be communicated by the competition management by e-mail or telephone (as by contacts given in the web form).

2. The competition management cannot be considered responsible for possible delays due to external factors such as postal errors, telematic problems, etc. The sent material will not be given back. In case of misfilling of the web form the management will have the chance of considering the application as invalid.

3. The artist, by applying for the Jazz Contest undersigns and accept the present rule in its every single part, thus lifting the management from any direct and indirect responsibility, implicitly authorising the management in associating its name or brand (relative to the group or to the artist) to the name or brand of all Jazz Contest’s commercial and media partners. In particular the artists and components of the selected groups renounce by now to every claim or right on photos, and/or videos of their live performances.

4. The participation to the Jazz Contest implies the acceptance of the personal data treatment, as by Law 675/96 (people ward in relation to personal data treatment) and subsequent amendment with Law Decree June 30th 2003 n. 196 of the protection data treatment Code, in order to allow management and development of the Jazz Contest. Sending group’s photos and CV, the Applicant authorizes the Contest’s management to the use of them.

5. The artists are committed to be professional and always on time both for the live performances and for all other possible activities relative to the Contest, otherwise they’ll be excluded from the competition.

6. The management reserves the right of realizing, at the end of the event, further promotional phonographic and paper supports containing Jazz Contest participants’ compositions. By applying to the Contest the artists grant since from the start the authorization to the insertion of their inedited compositions inside the promotional material.

7. There are no application costs, but there are no covered expenses, neither for travels or for hotels or meals, exception made for the live selections phase for those groups who will chose Siena and Brindisi as location (see paragraph “II round” in the paragraph “phases and participation modalities”). The hosting managements of the various rounds will make available to the enrolled groups concessionary fares on hotels and meals in local structures under agreement.
Any particular backline request will have to be promptly submitted to the competition manager.

8. Any variations to the present rules – dates changes included – will be communicated on the website (www.europeanjazzcontest.eu) under unconditioned judgement of the Contest’s management; the groups maintain in such cases their application cancellation rights.

9. Exclusive competence on any possible controversies that may rise up in relation to the rules’ interpretation is entrusted to the competent Brescia judicial authority.
