The IV edition of the EJC - "Groups" category - has come to an end on July 18th. The final rounds took place inside the Festival "Odio l'Estate" in Villa Carpegna, Rome, in the precence of a noticeable Committee of jazz experts: the Director of "Saint Louis College of Music" Stefano Mastruzzi, the Director of "Fondazione Siena Jazz" Franco Caroni, the Director of AFAM-MIUR Bruno Civello, the jazz journalist and historian Adriano Mazzoletti, the Director of the Jazz Department of Rome's Conservatory Paolo Damiani, the jazz journalist Luigi Onori, the jazz musician Pierpaolo Principato.

Il gruppo eletto vincitore assoluto per l'edizione 2011 è il BENOIT BERTHE "BACK" 4TET, dalla Francia.  Benoit Berthe = sax alto e soprano  Jean Kapsa = piano  Zacharie Abraham = contrabbasso  Nicolas Charlier = batteria  Il Benoit Berthe “Back” 4tet è composto da giovani musicisti che studiano o hanno studiato al Centre des Musiques Didier Lockwood (CMDL) di Dammarie Le Lys, in Francia. Il gruppo si è formato nell’estate del 2007 a partire dallo scopo comune di condivisione dei propri mondi musicali ed influenze, delle differenze e dei punti in comune. La musica che ne nasce è piena di energia, d’entusiasmo e interplay. Il repertorio è composto da brani originali d’influenza jazz post-bop, tra tradizione e modernità.

The group who won the 1st absolute prize for the 2011 edition is the BENOIT BERTHE "BACK" 4tet, from France.

The Benoit Berthe “Back” 4tet is composed by young musicians studying, or who have been studying, at the Centre des Musiques Didier Lockwood (CMDL) of Dammarie Le Lys, in France. The group formed during the summer 2007 pursuing the common target of sharing their own musical worlds and influences, their differences and common grounds. The music spreading from this is full of energy, enthusiasm and interplay. Their repertoire is composed by original compositions influenced by jazz, post-bop, between tradition and modernity.

Moreover, the Committee awarded 4 scholarships for the jazz specialization workshops "Siena Jazz" and "Jazz's Cool", 2012 edition, to the best soloists individuated among all the musicians of all participating groups:

The final rounds of the COMPOSERS and ARRANGERS categories took place on July 24th again within the Festival "Odio l'Estate" in Villa Carpegna, Rome. The Saint Louis Big Band, directed by M° Antonio Solimene, interpreted the tunes written or arranged by the 7 finalists (composers: Giampiero Villa, Paolo Ceccarelli, Carmelo Emanuele Patti, Luca Poletti; arrangers: Bruno Luise, Giacomo Eramo) in the presence of the committee, composed by: Saint Louis' Director Stefano Mastruzzi, the sax player Gianni Oddi (RAI Orchestra and PMJO), the Orchestra Director Bruno Biriaco, Saint Louis Big Band' Director Antonio Solimene, the musician Pierpaolo Principato, the pianist and composer Enrico Intra.

THE FIRST PRIZE FOR THE COMPOSERS CATEGORY (consisting in the enclosure of the tune inside the next cd by Saint Louis Big Band, special guest Javier Girotto) was awarded to LUCA POLETTI.
The first prize for the Arrangers Category was not awarded.
